The Florida Mentoring Partnership, managed by Volunteer Florida Foundation, in partnership with Florida Trend’s NEXT magazine for teens, developed and launched the Teen Trendsetters Reading Mentors program in 2002.
The Trendsetters program recruits and trains Florida’s teens to mentor third-graders. A specialized 40-Minute Mentor curriculum, developed by VFF, guides teens and is enhanced by three selected readers from Scholastic. This detailed guide ensures teens know what to do, and when, in tutoring third grade students.
This summer new Teen Trendsetters will join the club, effectively establishing the program in more than half of the 67 counties across Florida. Trendsetters also are effective in recruiting other teens to mentor, with hundreds of high school mentors now actively engaged. Florida’s fourth-graders posted the highest reading gains in the nation during the last school year, due in great part to the work they are doing with Trendsetters in their third grade year.
The Florida Association of Partners in Education, which oversees adult volunteers in schools, is instrumental in helping the teens organize and conduct programs in their hometowns.
